Unilever Sticky Problem - Sticky Solution

Spending thousand of dollars won't get you the solution to your problem. It's your perception and how you perceive the information and use it to think of a solution that matters. Sometime a simple activity or alteration can solve the problem which we overlook or doesn't give much of an importance.

Simple story: Unilever Indonesia has substantially invested in the social project intended to encourage young kids to brush their teeth. They introduce TV advertisements, Programs in School and child care centers but they were still struggling to assess whether they were able to actually changing the child's habits.

Dear Partners,
Greetings!

Hope you and your family are doing good. God bless you and your family with good health and togetherness.

During the past two months of lockdown where everything is standstill economic growth is negative, industries are on the verge of closed down, unemployment is on the all-time high, and death is trolling every day. We are left with limited resources for next couple of years. It is an indication that we need to change, even more, creating the way we do business. Challenge is how we are going to work, what skills are required in the future to get a job or be in the business. Opportunities are there we need to explore them. “Opportunity ideas do not lie around waiting to be discovered. Such ideas need to be produced. Edward de Bono”

As per the World Economic Forum report “Mapping Opportunity in the New Economy” report provides insights into emerging opportunities for employment across the global economy as well as unique detail regarding the skill sets needed to leverage those opportunities. Creating demand for millions of new jobs, and vast new opportunities into reality. Demand for both “Digital” and “Human factors”. Adoption of new technologies and new job roles with a broad variety of skills to match professional opportunities. Inclusive of both disruptive technical skills but also specialized industry skills and core business skills.

They also identified the rising demand of skills sets. Business Skills, Specialized Industry Skills, General and Soft Skills, Tech Baseline Skills, and Tech Disruptive Skills.

1. Business Skills are the set of skills required to operate or start an enterprise. The cluster includes skills such as Marketing, Project Management, Budgeting, and Business Development.

2. Specialized Industry Skills are specific to the field of the professions in question, such as Documentation in Cloud Computing, Video and Editing in Marketing, Sales and Content, or Radiation Oncology (in the Care Economy professional cluster). The cluster excludes skills related to the operation and design of digital technologies.

3. General skills (otherwise known as cross-functional skills) are typically non-cognitive capabilities that are needed across all professions. These include Leadership, Communication, Negotiation, Creativity, and Problem-Solving.

4. Tech Baseline Skills span Basic Computer Literacy, such as the ability to use the Microsoft Productivity Suites, alongside industry-specific applications of technology such as Web Design, Online Marketing, Social Media, Telecommunications, Drafting and Engineering Design Software, as well as Medical and Clinical Software.

5. Tech Disruptive Skills are those that allow individuals to use and design technologies that are set to impact business models and the labor market in significant ways over the coming years. These include Data Science, Natural Language Processing, Automation, Robotics, Cloud Computing, and Cybersecurity.

The report also shows the aggregate figure for the number of opportunities per 10,000 new opportunities, the emerging professions of the future analyzed in this report will account for 6.1 million opportunities globally over the course of 2020–2022. According to these assumptions, if current growth trends hold, these emerging professions will provide 1.7 million new jobs in 2020—and that figure will see a significant increase of 51% to 2.4 million opportunities by 2022.

“Great innovation only happens when people aren’t afraid to do things differently.”- George Cantor.

This is not the first time that you are lockdown and confined to a place or you are not allowed to move out. Your freedom is in jeopardy with limited access to your social contacts. This happened when you fall sick or you take a sabbatical. So what do you do, how do you manage yourself, how do you adapt and embrace the change? Your creative competency is the best way to be resilient.

Our creative ability help us solve problems and challenge the tough times. Times full of volatility are the ideal days for you to exercise your creativity. Few points to think creatively and navigate through times of ambiguity :

1. Change of schedule gives you more time to read :
Read more, at least an hour a day reading fictional books or books from thought leaders. It helps you grow and makes you think how fiction can be turned into reality. Your perspective and perception will start developing and encourage you to think differently. Thought leader's ideas help you, deep-dive, into their learning. Some of the recommendations are Making the Grass Greener on Your Side by Ken Melrose. Delivering Happiness: A Path to Profits, Passion, and Purpose by Tony Hsieh

2. Energies yourself with exercise and have fun.
You are off from your regular schedule. No meeting and no rush to meet the deadline. To be honest it actually sucks you into a routine pattern that stops you to think. Now you have all the time to focus. Start Visualization 15 minutes in a day. Daydreaming just visualizes about your future and what you want it to be. Play, take up a sport it helps your brain involving in some Lateral Thinking, problem-solving, experimenting and looking for alternatives.

3. Focus, and avoid multitasking
Start focusing, don't do multitasking. Research shows it takes 25 mins to get back to what you were doing after interruption by an email or a phone call. Our brain likes familiarity and predictability, known as the status quo and we often think we are better at things than everyone else. We do multitasking to optimist productivity. But making a switch is not easy. If you are a master of a multitasker, you will still be more productive when you transition to deep work.

4. What Next
Learn from your past and ask the question about what to do next so that after a few years you say "THANK YOU" with gratitude for this time when you focused yourself and designed your future goals. During your slowdown period try and help others. THINK how can you help others, by doing free webinars, sharing free services, etc. There are always surprising and unintended outcomes during difficult periods. Your generosity and gratitude help you grow and bring opportunities.

How to stay creative at all times.
